Valve guitar amps for insane tone
A long time ago there used to be only one design of guitar amp available - ones that used valves - or tubes as they are often called - to generate the ability to amplify sound.
These valves are what you used to see in old gramophones from the 1950 through to late 1960 era, before transistors were developed which then lead to solid state circuitry being incorporated in amps in order to produce amplification.
Solid state circuitry is now the norm in most guitar amps you find in shops today.
This is because most amp producers are targeting the low cost of entry level amps in an attempt to create volume sales amongst entry level guitarists.
These consumer type entry level guitar amplifiers do have a disadvantage though in that the sound they deliver can be thin and a little concocted - even though you get a lot of wizardry included such as crazy effects and distortions.
With a solid state amp the sound is of course manufactured, and following on from this there has been a subsequent movement back to searching for warmer tones and more complete analog sound that you can only get from tube based amplifiers.
All guitarists worth their salt will sooner or later attempt to discover and produce their own sound, their own tone so to speak and most will head down this path by searching out and buying a tube based amp.
An awesome starting point for a tube guitar amplifier is the Vox ac15 amp. Not only is it easy to move around being a single speaker 15 watt valve amplifier, but it can produce enough volume to be able to be heard along with the rest of a small band.If you are playing individually this Vox ac15 is awesome for jazz and blues guitarists, and should be really cool with a semi-hollow guitar. 15 watts of tube power is equivalent to like 40-50 watts of solid state amp so don’t be put off by the power rating, it is deceptive.
Most tube amps you need to have turned up to around 60-75% of their volume as this is normally there most efficient range where they produce the warmest tones.
Moving up in performance you can try the Vox ac30 custom classic, with 30 watts of tube grunt. These Vox tube amps use the same design as when they were first produced and they accompanied the British band invasion of the ’60’s.
Essentially the Vox ac30 is a reissue of an amp produced more than 45 years ago - a testament to the fact that great amps never die.
Climbing the ladder again in power is the Orange Rockerverb 50, an awesome amp that is both loaded with power in the form of 50 watts of tube driven tone, two magnificent speakers and still light enough to be moved single handedly.
A large number of famous artists such as Madonna and Prince, use these tube amplifiers in their bands. Being flexible enough to be used both on stage or in the studio, this amp suits Blues, Rock, Rock’n’roll and pop music enabling you to develop your own tone and style.
