Things To Do On Holiday In Brighton
Brighton is a small, interesting city close to London in the UK. It's a very popular destination, thanks to it's relaxed atmosphere, many pubs and restaurants, and beach. If you're coming for a holiday in Brighton, here are some places you must see:
The beach
The beach is a big draw for the city, although the top is mainly pebbles rather than sand. Just 15 minutes walk from the train station, all downhill, the main area between the piers gets full quickly in the heat of summer, but walk either east or west along the coastal path and you'll find an empty spot soon enough. The tide needs to be low for the sand to be revealed, but the pebbles don't seem to put anyone off and locals claim it's a 'young beach' which hasn't turned all to sand yet.
The beach front is home to a few pubs, art galleries, a restaurant, and the Fishing Museum, so you can grab a beer or a bit of culture while you're down there if the sun becomes too much for you.
The Pier
On the east side of the beach is the Palace Pier (AKA the Brighton Pier), home to amusement arcades, a fun fair, nightclub, and some small shops. A must for a candy floss and a wander around while you take a break from the beach.
The Pavilion
Five minutes walk from the beach is the Royal Pavilion, Brighton's most historic building. Rebuilt and extended for King George IV 200 years ago, it resembles a piece of India dropped in to England. The building is impressive and dominated by minarets and domes, it's well worth going on the tour to find out it's full history.
Behind the Pavilion are some small but very pleasant gardens, which were originally larger and laid out by John Nash, the designer of the current Pavilion. They're free to enter and provide much needed basking space when the sun is strong and the beach is full.
Next to the gardens is Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, which is free to entry and holds local designs, historical items and visiting exhibits.
Interesting shops
As well as the usual contingent of mainstream shops that appear in every English town, Brighton has two sections which are home to mainly independent shops.
The oldest section of Brighton, The Lanes were built when it was a small fishing village. The modern Lanes is a warren of cafes, restaurants, pubs, jewellery shops and other independent businesses. The Lanes are almost impossible to navigate, even for locals, so it's best to just wander through them and expect to get lost, in fact it's the best way to find interesting places.
The North Laine area is home to Brighton's most interesting independent shops. If you want a bonsai tree, an out of print album, high class stationery, or a fixed-wheel bike, you can get them all in the North Laine. In fact, all of those things are available on one road: Sydney Street, and there's lots more available besides. Fiercely independent, the trading association for the North Laine doesn't allow chain stores in the main streets so this is the best place to come to for strange shops that can't afford to exist on the high street.
The Marina
Within the Marina a row of restaurants give you a clear view over the moored boats, and block the view of the rest of the area, which is not very inspiring. You have even have your meal on a boat, a converted ship houses one of the most popular restaurants.
After eating, why not take a ride out on one of the boats? You can take a tour boat out to look for dolphins, even if you don't find any, you'll get some unique views of Brighton.
Outside the city
Drive a few minutes north and get to the South Downs, a national park where you can walk or ride in beautiful countryside. Further west Arundel, a historic tourist town which has a castle you can tour, and a lovely wildfowl lake which is home to many rare breeds of bird. If you have a family, taken them east and about twenty minutes drive from Brighton is Drusillas Zoo Park, home to meerkats and other exotic animals, and a large play area for children.
Whether you're coming for a day or a fortnight, there's plenty to see on a Brighton holiday. You can sit in pubs and restaurants all day and soak up the local vibe, or buzz about visiting museums and galleries. Whatever you want to do, it should be a relaxing and interesting visit.
