Cosplay: From Japan To The West
Halloween is the one time of the year when most people let loose and indulge their imaginations, dressing up as one of their fantasy characters. However, there are a group of people whose hobby it is to dress in amazing and elaborate costumes, called cosplay which is short for "costume play".
Cosplay is a type of performance art that originated in Japan where people dress up as their favorite characters from Japanese manga, anime, graphic novels, video games and movies. Nowadays, there are quite a few places for cosplay fans to put on their costumes and meet fellow players. There are specific cosplay parties. They also meet at comic book/video game trade shows and at manga or anime festivals.
Japanese manga and animation have now become popular in the West and it is mostly due to this that cosplay has also spread to the West. You can now find many countries that hold anime festivals and conventions annually. The anime festivals are competing with other festivals such as science fiction and historical enactments. Cosplay has now moved away from its original Japanese emphasis. It now embraces costumes from TV series and movies such as Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. We could even say that cosplay includes those who dress up at Renaissance Fayres and Civil War Re-enactments.
However, most purists would insist that Cosplay is exclusively to do with Japanese manga and anime. So, what are the most popular cosplay characters? The most popular include Naruto, Goku and Astro Boy.
Many companies have realized the potential of cosplay and have manufactured ready made outfits which are relatively cheap as well as accessories such as wigs, jewelry and props. Of course, many cosplay fans still prefer to make their own costumes. This is part of the fun of being involved in cosplay. It also enables you to be more true to the original characters of manga and anime. Indeed it is not only important to meticulously copy the costume but to attempt to copy the mannerisms of the character.
Do you think you might enjoy getting into cosplay? Or do you just want an original costume for Halloween? In any case, why not take a look at my anime costumes site to get some ideas?
