I beg to differ. While Star Trek in and of itself was Sci Fi...the crerator always saw it as The Love Boat in Space. And while the Love Boat was a show more geared toward comedy, there were definite soap opera themes, such as love and betrayal and mystery...all of which lots of ST:TNG had. You had your on and off Romance between Ryker and Troi, the "Will they do the deed??" tension between Picard and Crusher, the additon of Worf into the Troi-Ryker dynamic. The growing teen angst with Wesley Crusher...SOAP!
